Our Chosen Charity - The Human-Elephant Learning Programs Foundation
This year members are invited to donate an amount of their choice ($10, $20 or $50) to the Human-Elephant Learning Programs foundation with their membership. A charity that sends Australian trainers to Asia to help improve the lives of working Elephants. In 2017 we were took part in one of H-ELP's training workshops in at the Thai National Elephant Institute as assistant trainers. What a privilege and an experience!
There are many thousands of working elephants in Asia. Some of them work in the timber industry or in national parks looking for poachers. H-ELP is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to improve the welfare of these elephants by implementing evidence-based training strategies. H-ELP provides training advice and supplies training manuals for elephant trainers in India, Thailand, Myanmar and Nepal. Just as in horse training, when the welfare of the elephants improves, so too does the safety of the handlers. This makes H-ELP’s work very important. Checkout their work here or donate even more! |
The story behind our shirts and caps....
We've chosen shirts and caps that are as eco-friendly as possible. The apparel industry in one of the most polluting and resource hungry on the planet. From using pesticides in the production of cotton to releasing toxic dye into waterways, the industry has a lot to answer for when it comes to environmental damage. We've selected shirts made from raw cotton sourced from Australia and the USA, two countries that are highly regulated and produce high quality long stable cotton. The benefit of high quality cotton is that it produces longer lasting garments. The fabric is died using Cold Pad Batch Dyeing (CPB) Technology which uses 80% less water than conventional vat dyeing. To remove all shrinkage from the finished shirts, the fabric is cut and washed before producing garments using a laundry that produces and uses eco-friendly detergents made completely from plants. Finally they are packaged in bags made from cassava starch that are 100% compostable.
